The goal of our program is to encourage graduate students to teach using interactive methods of instruction that have been shown to enhance undergraduate student learning. These methods are presented while the graduate student is concurrently teaching small discussion sections associated with the large lectures. Graduate students also receive guidance on how to be an interactive teacher while maintaining ongoing dissertation research. We are preparing both training materials and resources for TAs to use in the classroom.

Our Emphasis on Balance
Graduate students need to gain experience balancing teaching and research. We make this a focus of our training by requiring students to form sensible research goals and report on their progress during their teaching. We also encourage them to articulate the mechanisms that helped them be productive, so we can pass on these tips to future training groups.

Recruiting graduate students and university support
Our experience has indicated that this training works very well on graduate students who have had little experience teaching but are eager to learn. We used videotape gathered from our evaluation videos to create a promotional video. We show this to first-year graduate students to stimulate interest in our program.
